Special exhibition featuring Yan Zhenqing, in Tokyo

Visited a calligraphy exhibition “Unrivaled Calligraphy: Yan Zhenqing and His Legacy” (from 16 Jan to 24 Feb, 2019) at Tokyo National Museum in Ueno, Tokyo. It was a really cold day but the museum was unbelievably crowded…

About the exhibition

The exhibition features Yan Zhenqing (709–785), one of the most famous Chinese calligraphers as well as a loyal governor of the Tang Dynasty. It also covers historical transition of calligraphy from ancient times to Qing Dynasty with masterpieces by various Chinese calligraphers. Some Japanese masterpieces are also exhibited.

This exhibition was a special exhibition on calligraphy, but the Tokyo National Museum has a wide range of collections. Both the special and permanent exhibitions are wonderful and worth a visit.
